Muse vs Meta AI: What Is the Difference Between Meta's Two AI Products?
Meta has two AI products with confusingly close names. Meta AI is the chatbot inside Facebook and Instagram; Muse is a personal agent that finishes tasks.

Meta now sells two AI products whose names differ by two letters, and they are not versions of the same thing. Meta AI is the chatbot built into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Muse, launched September 8, 2026, is a personal agent, software that takes a task off your hands and finishes it.
The short version
- Meta AI answers questions and chats inside Meta’s social apps. It has been rolling out since September 2023 and has reached the UK and the EU.
- Muse completes tasks: it browses, fills in forms, books, and buys, asking your approval before anything irreversible.
- Muse runs on a dedicated virtual machine in Meta’s cloud and meters usage in tokens, with free, $20, and $100 tiers.
- Muse is US and Canada only, for adults 18 and over. Meta AI is available in far more countries.
Two different jobs
Meta AI is a conversational assistant that answers questions, drafts text, explains topics, and generates images, all inside the social apps people already have, plus its own app and website. It launched in the US in September 2023, took about a year to reach the UK, and did not reach the EU until March 2025, a rollout Meta blamed on Europe’s regulatory system.
Muse starts where conversation ends. You describe an outcome, and Muse opens a browser, compares options, fills in forms, and checks out, asking permission before it spends your money or sends anything in your name. The work runs on Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual machine in Meta’s cloud, so a task continues after you close the app. A separate Sentinel agent approves anything Muse sends to the internet, and Meta says the agent has no visibility into your passwords or payment details. Our explainer on what an AI agent is covers the distinction in more depth.
The two products also handle very different data. Muse works with your inbox, calendar, stored logins, and payments, while a chatbot conversation does not hand over access to any of that.

Where Meta AI is the better fit
If you are outside the US and Canada, Muse is not an option at all, because the app does not even appear in your app store and sign-in is blocked at the account level. Meta AI is already in far more countries. We track Muse’s borders in our report on where Muse is available.
Meta AI also sits inside apps that billions of people open daily, with nothing to download, no account to set up, and no usage meter running. Opening Instagram is faster than delegating to an agent for a quick question, a caption, or an image.
Where Muse is the better fit
Meta AI can tell you which flight looks best, while Muse can book it after showing you the total and getting your approval. Muse connects to outside services, including Shopify, QuickBooks, Slack, Notion, and Zoom, and works across them in a single task. It also works as a standalone app and inside WhatsApp, where you message it the way you message a person.
Muse separates read access from write access through Sentinel, and every purchase or outgoing message needs your approval. Paid tiers are metered in tokens. The free tier includes a reported 100 million tokens a week, Power at $20 a month raises that to a reported 500 million, and Maximum at $100 a month to a reported 3 billion.
Which one should you use?
Use Meta AI for questions and quick creative work inside the apps you already have. Use Muse when the request ends in something done, such as a booked trip or a completed order. Plenty of people will use both. The names are close because the company is the same, but the products answer different requests: one talks, and the other finishes the job.
