Muse Passes 5 Million Downloads in 22 Days, Faster Than ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude

Sensor Tower estimates put Meta’s AI agent past the milestone in under a month, with a heavy assist from Meta’s own ad machine.

Meta’s Muse crossed 5 million downloads in the United States about 22 days after its September 8 launch, according to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower reported this week. The pace beats every major AI assistant to the same milestone: ChatGPT needed 56 days, Grok took 103, and Claude took 492, per Sensor Tower’s figures.

The estimate comes from Sensor Tower senior insights analyst Kara Lee, via 9to5Mac and Cointelegraph. As of September 30, Muse was also riding a 12-day streak as the top free app in the US App Store, according to 9to5Mac.

A Rare Launch Pace

Sensor Tower says only 23 apps have ever reached 5 million US downloads within 22 days of launch, and roughly 85% of them are mobile games like Fortnite, Pokémon GO, and Candy Crush. The non-gaming exceptions are Disney+, HBO Max, and Meta’s own Threads, which pulled about 20 million, 18 million, and 14 million downloads respectively in their first 22 days.

It launched on both iOS and Android, while Claude and Grok were iOS-only for their first five days. It is also only available in the US and Canada so far.

Meta’s Ad Machine Helped

The download curve didn’t happen on its own. Sensor Tower reports that Meta began ramping its advertising spend for Muse on September 16, the same day downloads spiked 73% day over day. Over the two weeks from September 14 to 27, Muse accounted for up to half of Meta’s daily house-ad impressions, as Facebook and WhatsApp ceded share. Sensor Tower also ranked Muse among the top 15 US brands by advertising impressions for the week of September 21–27.

Downloads Aren’t Users

Five million installs say more about curiosity than habit. Internal data reviewed by The Information puts Muse’s active base at more than 3 million users submitting at least one prompt per week and more than 1 million prompting daily, with over 4 million people using Muse in some form each week. That’s real traction, and a much smaller number than the download total.

Muse itself is Meta’s play at a personal AI agent rather than a chatbot: it browses the web, sends emails, fills out forms, and books travel on a user’s behalf, running inside a dedicated virtual machine in Meta’s cloud.

The milestone gives Meta a genuine early lead in the agent race. The downloads came fast, boosted by Meta’s own ad inventory. Turning installers into habitual users is the harder part, and the one the download charts can’t measure.
